The County Durham market town of Stockton, on the River Tees, can trace its history back to Anglo-Saxon times; its manor came in to being in 1138. Over 700 years later it was the area chosen by the South Stockton Hunt for their series of race meetings under rules in the latter part of the 1800s. The first meeting took place on Tuesday 22nd March 1870 at the Garbutt’s Estate near Mandale. The Open Hunters’ Steeplechase over 3 miles was won by Mr W Cowan’s Whitesocks, beating Maid of the Morning and Carbineer. The Hunters’ Stakes went to Philippa, while Rosedale later won the Selling Steeplechase for Mr Lucas. A  final card was staged the next year on Tuesday 28th May 1871 when the Open Hunters’ Steeplechase saw Mr Applegarth’s 4/5 favourite Carbineer defeat Maid of the Morning. While races continued to be staged at Stockton and Teesside Park, there are no further records of South Stockton Steeplechase meetings.
